Hair Loss and Thinning

Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause hair loss, but they do it differently. Underactive thyroid causes hair to become dry, brittle, and fall out diffusely across the scalp. You might also lose the outer third of your eyebrows — a hallmark sign. Overactive thyroid causes fine, thin hair that breaks easily. The hair loss often doesn't stop until thyroid levels are properly treated.

Pro Tip

The outer eyebrow test: if the outer third of your eyebrows is thinning or gone, suspect hypothyroidism.
