A hoarse voice that persists for more than 2-3 weeks without an obvious cause (like a cold or shouting) can indicate lung cancer pressing on the nerve that controls your voice box, or a tumor in the upper airway. While hoarseness has many benign causes, unexplained voice changes that don't resolve — especially in smokers or former smokers — warrant urgent investigation.
