Brittle, Spoon-Shaped Nails

Your nails reveal a lot about your iron status. Iron-deficient nails become thin, brittle, and break easily. As deficiency worsens, nails can develop a concave shape — curving upward like a spoon (koilonychia). This spoon-nail appearance is so strongly linked to iron deficiency that doctors use it as a diagnostic sign. You might also notice vertical ridges and pale nail beds.

Pro Tip

Place a drop of water on your fingernail. If it pools in the center because the nail is concave, that's spoon nails.
