Rapid or Irregular Heartbeat

When a blood clot blocks blood flow in your lungs, your heart has to work harder to pump blood through the remaining open vessels. This causes your heart to beat faster (tachycardia) or irregularly. You might feel your heart racing or fluttering even while resting. Combined with shortness of breath, this is a strong indicator that a clot has reached your pulmonary arteries.

Pro Tip

A resting heart rate suddenly over 100 BPM without fever or anxiety could indicate a pulmonary embolism.
