A blood clot causes inflammation in the affected vein, making the skin over it feel noticeably warm to the touch and appear reddish or discolored. This warmth is localized — you can feel the temperature difference by touching the area and then touching the same spot on the other leg. The skin might also appear slightly shiny or taut due to swelling underneath.
